Pace/MacGill Gallery is pleased to present Pairs, an ensemble of works by Diane Arbus, Yto Barrada, Aneta Bartos, William Christenberry, Robert Frank, Emmet Gowin, Paul Graham, Peter Hujar, Richard Learoyd, Richard Misrach, Yoshitomo Nara, Susan Paulsen, Irving Penn, Lucas Samaras, Kiki Smith, Saul Steinberg and Garry Winogrand, among others. The exhibition will be on view from May 10 through August 22, 2018 and explores the concept of pairs through both subject matter and display.
Many of the showcased works depict sets of subjects - a couple sunbathing on their lawn, siblings wrestling in the grass, two New York City women walking their dogs - while others, such as Richard Learoyd's Jasmijn away from Light / Jasmijn to the Light, 2010, present two-panel portraits of the same subject taken from different angles. In Buddy / Buddy, 2009, Yoshitomo Nara creates an amusing juxtaposition of human and animal portrait pairs, while Paul Graham's diptych, Paris, November 11-15, 2015, evokes a more introspective tone. Pairings by Irving Penn and William Christenberry further expand upon the theme with visual duets of the same subject in different media.
An opening reception for Pairs will be held on Thursday, May 10 from 4 to 7 pm.
