Pace/MacGill Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in the 2016 edition of Art Basel from June 16 – 19.The gallery will present a thought-provoking selection of Richard Avedon’s striking civil rights portraits which capture the shifting dynamics of the country’s social and political climate in the early 1960s and beyond.

A revolutionary in the genre of photographic portraiture, Richard Avedon (1923–2004) traveled throughout the American South photographing civil rights activists and such disparate subjects as William Casby, one of the last living Americans born into slavery, and George Lincoln Rockwell, the founder of the American Nazi Party – all the while employing his trademark minimalist approach to image-making. His pictures challenge conventional boundaries between studio photography and reportage, and explore key themes of power, equality, fear, race, class, gender and religion. Probing the politics that pulled American society apart, many of Avedon's civil rights photographs were published in Nothing Personal, his 1964 collaboration with former classmate and author James Baldwin. Over a half-century later, their relevance and resonance remain.

Alongside this single-artist presentation, a selection of modern and contemporary photographs by Harry Callahan, William Eggleston, Robert Frank, Paul Graham, Josef Koudelka, Richard Learoyd, Richard Misrach, Irving Penn, Michal Rovner, Viviane Sassen, and JoAnn Verburg will be on view.
